Mr Drakeford said Mr Skates would "focus on strengthening Welsh Labour in north Wales in preparation for next year's municipality elections and the next UK Parliamentary election", adding: "He will also strengthen Labour links between north Wales and north west England."

In an interview following a announcement the First Minister said: "Ken has been a real strength in cabinet and a voice for north Wales. He will continue speaking up for north Wales and for Welsh Labour but in another role. We'll miss his energy and fervour."

When asked whether he'd moved Mr Gething from health to economy or if Mr Gething had asked to move Mr Drakeford declined to answer.

"We discussed it together," he said. "It's a large decision for the government and for him because of the fantastic job he has done in Wales to keep Wales safe.

"Vaughan Gething has been health minister for seven many I can tell you, having been health minister, it's an enormously demanding job.

He said his message to his new cabinet is: "I would like these to jump on from the beginning with the most challenging we need to achieve, to be that radical reforming government that I want us to be for the following 5 years."
