Full lockdown changes for Wales revealed as international travel resumes with traffic light system

These are the full lockdown changes set to occur in Wales in the coming days and weeks as it is confirmed the nation will enter alert level 2 from Monday.

We understand international travel is anticpated to be in a position to resume from Monday but extra safeguards is going to be set up for individuals returning from some countries to try to prevent coronavirus re-entering Wales. However, the Welsh Government is constantly on the advise individuals to only travel abroad for essential purposes.

It has been confirmed that all remaining indoor tourism accommodation will reopen and indoor attractions like cinemas, bowling alleys, and theatres, in addition to stately homes, will also be expected to have the ability to welcome people back. You'll also have a rise in the number of people able to attend organised outdoor and indoor events.

And that we realize that when the situation in Wales remains positive, in the next review we are likely to see further changes enter into force from June 7. The Welsh Government had already announced that hospitality venues could be allowed to open indoors from Monday, May 17.

What changes occur from Monday, May 17?

  • Indoor hospitality can re-open to 6 people from up to six households (excluding children under 11).
  • All holiday accommodation can re-open fully.
  • Entertainment venues, including cinemas, bingo halls, bowling alleys, indoor-play centres and areas, casinos, amusement arcades, and theatres can re-open.
  • Cinemas, theatres concert halls and sports grounds can sell drink and food so long as it is consumed in a seated area for watching the performance.
  • Indoor visitor attractions, including museums and galleries can re-open.
  • Up to 30 people can take part in organised indoor activities and up to 50 people in organised outdoor activities. including wedding receptions and wakes.

What about after that?

Should the problem remain positive, the Welsh Government is set to look at the next changes in 3 weeks time at the review on June 4, which would likely come into force from June 7

  • Further changes to meeting people in private homes.
  • Increasing the amount of individuals who can meet outdoors and the number of individuals who can attend organised activities and events, including receptions, to 50 indoors and 100 outdoors.
  • Permitting larger-scale events to occur indoors and outdoors.

How will international travel work?

International travel will resume from Monday, May 17. A traffic light system, out of the box in place with England and Scotland, is anticpated to be introduced with countries is going to be classified as green, amber and red.

This means people residing in Wales can travel to a small number of foreign destinations without the need to quarantine on their own return however, you will have to quarantine if you've been to countries not on the green list.

From Monday, 24 May, a paper-based vaccination status is going to be readily available for people in Wales who may have had two doses of vaccination and need to urgently visit a country that requires Covid-19 vaccination proof. The Welsh Government is constantly on the advise people to only travel abroad for essential purposes.

The traffic light system in position in England, which Wales will align with, rules that travellers to countries rated green will not need to isolate on their own return, but they need to take a Covid-19 test before and after their trip.

The countries which are around the UK Government's green list are Portugal (such as the Azores and Madeira), Israel and Jerusalem, Gibraltar, Iceland, Singapore, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, New Zealand, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and South Georgia and also the South Sandwich Islands.

Arrivals from amber countries will still need to quarantine, while red-list countries have the strictest rules, with only UK or Irish nationals, or UK residents, permitted to return – plus they be forced to pay for any 10-day remain in a Government quarantine hotel.
